Spotlight on: Amethyst!

Amethyst is a popular mineral that is great for meditation and use as a sleep aid, and also encourages self control while calming harsh emotions. It helps overcome addictions and issues with the nervous system. Metaphysically, Amethyst facilitates a connection to our spirit guides and balances polarities, helping to find equilibrium in any situation! This crystal is traditionally associated with the Purple Crown Chakra, the energy center that sits just above your head and is associated with the Pineal Gland, as well as the Third Eye Chakra. In general, use amethyst to purify and protect, and to welcome peace and sleep.

History and Lore: ⠀

According to Greek/ Roman mythology, Amethyst was a young virgin who, upon a stroke of bad luck, crossed paths in the forest with an angry Dionysus (or Bacchus when in Rome :P ), the god of wine and debauchery, while on her way to worshiping Diana. In his rage, he sent his tigers after her. Amethyst prayed to Diana for help, and Diana turned her into a beautiful white stone to protect her from the beasts. Dionysus, immediately feeling remorseful, cried so much into his wine goblet that it toppled over and spilled into Amethyst, turning her a beautiful purple color. For this reason the ancients believed amethyst would protect against intoxication, and thus carved wine goblets out if the mineral to keep them from getting too drunk!

Practical Applications:
Activation of an amethyst is directly linked to one's sobriety and ability to transform our lower nature of emotional and physical indulgence into a solid perception of our sensory experiences. Just as Dionysus crystallized the innocent maiden, we can preserve the innocent and foolish aspects of ourselves. We can help regulate our behavior with the amethyst crown chakra by simply meditating regularly with this crystal to find a clear, sober, protective guidance to care for yourself and others.
